Piața Victoriei – Top tourist attraction in Timișoara

Victory Square is one of the central squares in the city of Timișoara, the place where Timișoara was declared the first free city in Romania on December 20, 1989. At the opposite ends of the square are the Opera to the north and the Metropolitan Cathedral to the south. The promenade on the right from the Opera to the Cathedral is called ‘Corso,’ while the one on the left is called ‘Surogat.’

Around the square, there are cultural institutions – the Romanian Opera, the National Theatre, the Hungarian State Theatre, and the German State Theatre, all three theatres being housed in the same building, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Timiș, Capitol, and Studio cinemas, the Banat Museum, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, and many shops.

‘Corso’ is the name of the promenade that starts from the Opera towards the Cathedral, on the right side. In the past, it was the walking place for Timișoara’s high society because it was shaded, and maintaining white, untanned skin was important, as it was a standard in the old nobility. The actual promenade begins with the Lloyd Palace, which houses the Polytechnic’s rectorate, followed by the Neuhausz Palace, Merbl Palace, Dauerbach Palace, Hilt Palace, and, at the end, the Széchenyi Palace.

‘Surogat’ is the opposite promenade, on the left side, and a direct continuation of Alba Iulia Street. In the past, only young people and workers walked here. Students were only allowed with the school’s permission, and soldiers had to prove they were on leave to walk here. The first building is the Löffler Palace, followed by the Chamber of Commerce Palace, next to which the Scala Cinema was built in 1938 on the side street, later renamed Studio.

Monuments: The She-Wolf Statue – ‘The She-Wolf with Cubs,’ supported by a 5-meter-high pillar, is a replica of the Capitoline Wolf, gifted to Timișoara in 1926 by the city of Rome. The Fish Fountain – located between the She-Wolf statue and the Romanian National Opera. It was built in 1957. Initially, its shape was a five-pointed star, on which bronze fish were placed. After numerous restorations, the fountain reached its current form.

Piața Libertății – Top tourist attraction in Timișoara

Built in the mid-18th century, it was known and recognized for a period as the Arms Square, Military Square, or Parade Square. It was named Liberty Square in 1848, with the outbreak of the Hungarian Revolution, but after the Austrian army recaptured the city, the square reverted to the name Prince Eugene of Savoy Square. The oldest building in this area is considered to be the New Generalate, from 1730. However, the Military Command and the Military Casino should not be forgotten. The latter remained famous for the lavish parties once thrown by officers. The Old City Hall was built according to the plans of an Italian from Timișoara, on the site of the Ottoman public bath. In the middle of the square stands the Baroque statue of the Holy Virgin Mary and Saint Nepomuk, a monument made in Vienna in the 1750s.

The monument depicts the Holy Virgin blessing John Nepomuk, the protector of Catholics. The House with Atlantes, another historic monument in Timișoara, was the dowry of the Aromanian merchant Macri for his daughter. What is special about this site are the two Turkish columns ritually buried, a sign that the Turkish rule was also buried with the recapture of the city by the Austrians.

Piața Unirii – Top tourist attraction in Timișoara

Union Square is the oldest historical square in Timișoara, designed in Baroque style. Throughout its history, the square has also been called Hauptplatz (Main Square), Domplatz (Cathedral Square), and Losonczy Square (named after Count Stefan Losonczy, who was killed in 1552 when the fortress was captured by the Turks). It was named Union Square in 1919 because this is where the Romanian troops stopped when they entered Timișoara.

The square hosts important tourist attractions, such as the Roman Catholic Cathedral, the Baroque Palace, the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, the Brück House, the Holy Trinity Monument, the mineral water fountain, and other architectural monuments.
